# Local Audio Save (Desktop)

> Save the audio from a live recording straight to your computer instead of the server. Use this when you want to keep the original audio yourself.

<Note>Local audio save is a desktop-only feature. The web settings show a preview only.</Note>

## Turn on local saving

In the desktop app, open **\[Settings]** → **\[Preferences]** and turn on the **\[Save audio file locally]** toggle. From then on, every live recording saves its audio file to your computer automatically.

* The audio file is saved only on the device that did the recording. **It is never saved to the server.**
* Files land in `Tiro/recordings` inside your Documents folder, in WAV format.
* Tiro keeps a set number of the most recent recordings and clears out older files automatically.

## Download a saved recording

Notes that have audio saved locally show a **\[Download audio file]** button at the top of the note. If a recording is still in progress, pause it first to download. For an offline recording made on desktop, the save dialog lets you store the file at a location of your choice under the note title.

## How is this different from paragraph replay?

You can turn the two features on and off independently.

* **Local audio save**: keeps the whole recording on your computer only. Since nothing uploads to the server, it suits you when you want to manage the original yourself.
* **[Paragraph audio replay](/en/guide/notes/replay)**: stores the audio on the server and plays it back paragraph by paragraph from any device.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the saved audio go to the server?

No. Locally saved audio stays on the device that recorded it. If you need server storage, turn on paragraph audio replay separately.

### Can I use it in a web browser?

It's desktop-only. The web settings show guidance but don't do anything, so install the [desktop app](/en/guide/start/download) if you need it.

### My older recordings disappeared.

To manage storage, Tiro keeps only a set number of the most recent files and deletes older ones automatically. Move anything you want to keep long-term out of the save folder to another location.
