The trash screen is available on web and in the desktop app. Notes deleted in the mobile app go to the trash too, so you can restore them on web or desktop.

Restore from the trash

Deleting a note doesn’t erase it right away. The note moves to the [Deleted Notes] folder in the sidebar, where it’s kept for 30 days by default, and you can restore it anytime during that period.
1

Open Deleted Notes

Open the [Deleted Notes] folder in the sidebar, right below [Shared with me]. This folder only appears while there’s a note in the trash. Notes you delete in any workspace all gather here, no matter which workspace you’re viewing.
2

Restore the note

Find the note you want back and select [Restore]. The note returns to its original state. Each note in the list shows the workspace it belonged to, its deletion date, and how many days remain until it’s permanently deleted, so you can check the remaining time there.
The [Delete permanently] button and emptying the trash can’t be undone. Notes that were automatically deleted after the retention period can’t be recovered either.
Only the person who created the note can restore or permanently delete it. Notes shared with you don’t appear in the list. Enterprise workspaces may use a retention period other than 30 days, so go by the permanent deletion date shown in the list.

After the retention period, rebuild the note from the audio file

Even after a note is gone from the trash, you can recreate the conversation notes by uploading the original audio file, as long as it’s still on your computer. The audio file is saved automatically by the desktop app (Windows and Mac) in these two cases:
  • Notes recorded in offline mode: the audio file is always saved to your computer.
  • Notes recorded with live recording: the file is saved if the [Save audio file locally] toggle in [Settings][Preferences] was on before you recorded.
1

Find the file in the save folder

Open the Tiro/recordings folder inside your Documents folder in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac). Files are saved in WAV format, so use the creation date to find the one from around the time you recorded the deleted note.
2

Upload the audio file

In a new note, choose the [File Upload] menu and upload the WAV file you found. Once the upload finishes, the conversation notes and document are created as a new note.
Locally saved files are kept only up to a set number of recent recordings, and older files are cleaned up automatically. Once you find the file, we recommend copying it to another folder before recovering.
A note made from an upload is a new note, so memos or edits you typed into the original note aren’t included. The recorded conversation is transcribed again.

If there’s no audio file either

The audio file won’t be on your computer in these cases:
  • The [Save audio file locally] toggle was off during the live recording
  • You recorded in a web browser
  • The file was old and removed by automatic cleanup
There may still be something we can do, so reach out through the Contact support button in the Tiro app or on the website. Include the deleted note’s title, when it was recorded, when you deleted it, and your environment (web/Windows/Mac/Android/iOS), and we’ll look into it.

FAQ

How long are deleted notes kept?

30 days by default. After the retention period, notes are permanently deleted automatically and can’t be recovered. The time remaining is shown on each note in the [Deleted Notes] list.

Can I restore a note I deleted in the mobile app?

Yes. Notes deleted in the mobile app go to the trash too, but the trash screen is currently only on web and in the desktop app. Sign in on web or in the desktop app and restore it from the [Deleted Notes] folder.

Can other people see notes in the trash?

No. While a note is in the trash, it can’t be opened, its share links stop working, and it doesn’t show up in search. Restoring the note brings everything back.

What should I turn on for next time?

Turn on the [Save audio file locally] toggle in the desktop app, and the original audio of every live recording stays on your computer. See Local Audio Save for details.
